They fought as mercenary soldiers under the Earl of Ross who defeated Viking invaders in Ross-shire. The clan under chief Donald Munro, son of O'Ceann were granted lands in Rosshire and a seat at Foulis Castle as a reward for helping King Malcolm II  to defeat Viking invaders from Scandinavia. Today there are approximately 54,000 bearers of the surname Monroe living in the US.
