Norris family crest

The Irish and English surname Norris is a regional name for someone who had migrated from the North (i.e. further north in England, or from Scotland or Scandinavia), from Old French nor(r)eis meaning “northerner,” a topographic name for someone who lived in a house on the north side of a settlement or estate, from the Middle English term north meaning “north” and  hous meaning “house.” In Ireland the name is most frequently found in Derry and in the Southeastern counties of Waterford. Kilkenny and Tipperary. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Norreis. This was dated 1148, in the "Winton Rolls" of the county of Hampshire.
