The name Ó Conchubhair is derived from first name Conchubhar, meaning” lover of hounds.” There are six different septs (clans) of the family in Ireland. Cathal Crobhdearg Ua Conchobair (Anglicised as Cathal O'Connor/O'Conor and Cathal the Red-handed O'Conor) (1153–1224), was a King of Connaught. He was the youngest son of the  Tairrdelbach Ua Conchubair, High King of Ireland and brother to the last fully recognized High King Ruadri Ua Conchubair. His own sons Aodh and Feidhlimidh were kings of Connacht after him. A notable bearer of the name O’Connor is Sandra Day O’Connor United States Supreme Court Justice.
Today there are approximately 75,000 bearers of the surname O'Connor living in The United States.
