O'Higgins Family Crest
The Irish surname O'Higgins, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó hUiginn meaning “descendant of Uiginn,” a name meaning “Viking, or sea-rover” (from Old Norse víkingr). The name is found throughout Ireland particularly in Ulster and Leinster. The O'Higgins' were a literary clan known for their poetic ability, and were very prominent in South America. Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme was a Chilean independence leader who, together with José de San Martín, freed Chile from Spanish rule in the Chilean War of Independence.
