The Irish surname O'Kane, also found in Scotland, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Catháin meaning “descendant of Cathán.” The O'Kane’s were a leading clan in county Derry in the north of Ireland, the name is also found in Leinster and Connaught. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1674 when John Kane is registered in Maryland. Today there are approximately 8,000 bearers of the name O'Kane in the United States.
