The name which is frequently found in Devon and surrounding counties derives from the Middle English term  palfrey meaning “ a saddle-horse” (Old French palefrei). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John le Palfreyman, which was dated 1273, in the "Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire." A notable bearer of the name is the Australian Cricket player Brent Palfreyman from Tasmania.
