The Scottish and Northern Irish surname Reid is a  nickname for a person with red hair or a ruddy complexion, from the Older Scots term  reid meaning “red.” The first recorded reference to the name is Gilbert le Rede of Coul, who is registered in Scotland in 1296. Joseph Reid (1843 - 1917), born in Ayrshire, Scotland was the inventor of the Reid oil burner, which did so much to advance the oil industry in the United States.
