Scully Family Crest

Scully Family CrestThe Irish surname Scully is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Scolaidhe meaning “descendant of the scholar,” from scolaidhe meaning “scholar.” Originally a Co. Westmeath Clan, the Scullys were driven by Anglo-Norman pressure south to Munster around 1170. One branch of the family settled in Lorrha (North Tipperary), and another established itself in South Tipperary, near Cashel. Clan members were interred by the famous Rock of Cashel and have a memorial there called Scully's Cross. A notable bearer of the name is the Irish playwright Darach Ó Scolaí (Dara Scully). Today there are approximately 9,000 bearers of the surname Scully living in The United States.
