Sheridan Family Crest
The Irish surname Sheridan most frequently found in counties Cavan, Mayo and Meath is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Sirideáin meaning "descendant of Sirideán", a personal name of uncertain origin, possibly akin to sirim meaning “ ‘to seek.” The Sheridan’s were an erenagh family of Longford, who later attached themselves to the O'Reilly's of Breifne (Cavan) as scholars. Over the centuries they have produced some remarkable writers and at least one general, Philip H. Sheridan of the U.S. Army. Today there are more than 22,000 bearers of the name Sheridan living in The United States.
