The Portuguese surname Silva, also found in Galicia in northwest Spain, is an habitational name from any of the many places called Silva, or a topographic name from the Portuguese term  silva meaning “thicket, or bramble.” Silva is the most common surname in  Portugal and Brazil, it is also widespread in regions of the former Portuguese Empire in Asia, including India and Sri Lanka. A notable bearer of the name was the Brazilian 18th Century writer António José da Silva.
