Steen Family Crest
The Scottish and English surname Steen, also found in Germany, is derived from a reduced form of the personal name Steven. When found in Germany the name derives from the Middle High German stein meaning “ a rock,” hence a topographic name either for someone who lived on stony ground or for someone who lived by a notable outcrop of rock or by a stone boundary marker or monument. In Scotland the surname is chiefly found in Fife, Ayrshire and Roxburghshire. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Alfricus Stein, which was dated 1155, in the rolls of the abbey of Holme, Norfolk. Today there are approximately 13,000 bearers of the name Steen living in the US.
