Steere Family CrestThe English surname Steere, also spelled Steer and found predominantly in Devon, is derived from the Middle English term steer meaing “bullock,” hence a nickname for a truculent person or a metonymic occupational name for someone who was responsible for tending cattle. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Geoffrey Ster in the  Worcestershire Pipe Rolls of 1209. Jeremiah Steer married Elizabeth Ammery at St. James's church, Duke's Place, Westminster, on March 30th 1684. A notable bearer of the name was the compositor Vincent Steer noted for writing the Typographer Bible in the early 20th Century.
