Washington Family Crest
The English surname Washington is an habitational name from either of the places called Washington, in Tyne and Wear and West Sussex. The latter is from Old English Wassingatun meaning “settlement of the people of Wassa,” a personal name that is probably a short form of some compound name such as Waðsige, composed of the elements wað meaning “hunt” and sige meaning “victory.” John Washington, whose great, great, grandson George was the first President of the United States, emigrated "during the usurpation of England by Oliver Cromwell in 1657". The family were the original owners of Washington in Durham, although they moved south to Northamptonshire in the 16th century.
