Waugh Family Crest
The Scottish surname Waugh, found in the borderlands and northern England is an ancient ethnic name meaning “foreigner.” The name was applied originally to the Welsh-speaking Strathclyde Britons, who survived as a separate group in Scotland well into the Middle Ages. In Scotland the Waughs of Heap in Roxburghshire held these lands from the 13th Century to the 17th Century. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Walgh, which was dated 1296, Documents Relating to Scotland, Public Records Office, during the reign of John Balliol, King of Scotland, 1292 - 1296.
