Gilday family crest
The Irish surname Gilday is a reduced Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac Giolla Dé meaning ‘son of the servant of God’, from Dia ‘God’. The name originated with a monastic family in Donegal in the 11th century. To this day the name is found most frequently in the north west of Ireland particularly in counties Donegal and Leitrim.
