The first record of the name is in 1166 when Ralph Heued is registered in the "Pipe Rolls of Norfolk." Additional early references include Thomas del Heved (Nottinghamshire, 1275); Roger Byheved (Cheshire, 1285) and Walter Othehede (Derbyshire, 1331). A notable bearer of the name was Anthony Head (1906-1983) the British soldier, Conservative politician and diplomat.
