The Irish surname Madden is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Madáin meaning “descendant of Madán,” a reduced form of Madadhán, from madadh meaning “dog.” The O'Madain's originated from lands on the River Shannon in County Galway, in the west of Ireland, at one time holding over 25,000 acres.
