Morgan Family Crest

The surname Morgan is of Celtic origin arising from the ancient Britons of Wales. The surname Morgan is derived from the old Welsh personal name Morcant composed of te Welsh elements Mor meaning "sea" and cant meaning "circle." The name Morgan is first found in Caernarvonshire where they held a family seat from ancient times. The surname Morgan is predominantly associated with Wales with some families also found in Ireland. Notable bearers of the surname Morgan include the acclaimed seventeenth century arms painter and author Sylvanus Morgan. Sylvanus Morgan was born in March 1620 and died in March 1693. He was born in London, was brought up to and practised the profession of an arms-painter. In 1661, he published a work on heraldry, entitled The Sphere of Gentry, deduced from the Principles of Nature: an Historical and Genealogical Work of Arms and Blazon, in Four Books. Morgan says that this book had taken him years to compile and had been originally intended for dedication to Charles I, and that he had neglected his trade as arms-painter, suffered much illness, and had had his house burnt down.
