The Irish surname O’Brien is an anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Briain meaning “descendant of Brian,”a personal name probably based on the element bre- ‘hill’, with the transferred sense ‘eminence’, i.e. ‘exalted one’. The O’Brien’s take their name from Brian Boru (941 - 1014), High King of Ireland, who was killed at the Battle of Clontarf. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of O'Brien, which was dated circa 1055, in the "Annals of the Four Masters." Notable bearers of the surname O'Brien include Hugh O'Brien the 19th Century American politician who was the Mayor of Boston from 1885 to 1889. Hugh was born in Ireland on July 13th 1827 and died in Boston, Massachusetts on August 1st 1895. He had the honor of being the first Irish and first Catholic Mayor of Boston.
