The surname Potter is of occupational origin which was brought to England following the Norman invasion of the 11th Century. The name Potter describes the maker of clay or metal storage vessels which in turn was derived from the Latin term potus, meaning “to drink.” The name was first found in county Hampshire where the Potters held ancestral lands that were granted by Duke William of Normandy after the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
