Overview
The Sampaio family approached Heraldic Jewelry with a deeply meaningful idea: to create a custom men’s crest ring as a birthday gift for
their father. The inspiration for the ring came from a traditional 17th-century Italian coat of arms that the family had discovered through their own research. Their father had spent considerable time tracing the family’s heritage and locating an old image of the Sampaio family crest in Italy. The family wanted to honor that research by transforming the historic image into a lasting piece of jewelry.
The finished ring was intended to represent family, courage, heritage, and military strategy — values reflected in the original coat of arms and carried forward through the custom design.
From the beginning, the client wanted the ring to feel traditional, symbolic, and faithful to the original family crest. Rather than modernizing the design, the goal was to preserve the character of a traditional Italian crest ring inspired by medieval and 17th-century heraldic aesthetics. The client provided an image of the original Italian coat of arms from an old book and this served as the foundation for the entire design.

Design Process
- The challenge was translating an image from an old book into a clean, engravable jewelry design while preserving the original crest's spirit. The team balanced symbolism and tradition to create a bold, refined ring that feels historically grounded.
- The final design featured eagles and a chequy background. These elements have deep heraldic meaning. The Eagle is: a symbol of nobility and strength and the Chequy pattern represents courage and military strategy.
- The proofing process was efficient and successful. The client immediately approved the final proof, as the design perfectly matched the family’s vision. No revisions were necessary before production.
- Effective communication between the client and design team was vital. The client appreciated how the team clarified the possibilities of the historic image and provided careful, clear guidance throughout the custom design process.
