The English surname Woods, also found in Scotland and Ireland, topographic name for someone who lived in the woods. When found in Ireland and Scotland it is a translation of Ó Cuill meaning “descendant of Coll, “or in Ulster of Mac Con Coille, a personal name meaning “hound of the wood.” The first written reference to the name is Walter de la Wode in the Book of Fees for the county of Herefordshire in 1242. A noted bearer was the Kiwi composer John Joseph Woods who composed the New Zealand national anthem. Woods was born in Tasmania in 1849 to Irish parents with fourteen other children, seven boys and seven girls. His father was a soldier. After teaching in Tasmania for nine years, he migrated to New Zealand as a young man and worked for a time in Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.  When Woods was made an Honorary Freeman of New Zealand, he was commended for his "efficiency, integrity and devotion to duty".
